The village of Northfield is located about 20 miles North of Downtown Chicago with a populations of about 5,500. The village was first settled into in the mid 1800's by Mary Young and elected their first Village President by 1926. As the City of Chicago grew throughout the 20th century, Northfield prospered and matured into one of the premier urban villages within the Chicagoland area. It is now considered part of the collection of upscale residential neighborhoods north of Chicago.
Northfield experiences two main flood hazard areas; Middlefork of the North Branch of the Chicago River Basin and the Skokie River Basin. Flooding in these areas typically occur in the spring and fall.
The Village Board has implemented a cost-sharing reimbursement program to assist
eligible homeowners in reducing the risk of sanitary sewer backups. The Village will
reimburse homeowners 50% of the cost of eligible improvements, up to $5,000. The
program budget is determined annually by the Village Board and funds will be distributed
on a first-come, first-served basis.
